The instinct on move-in day is to start unpacking immediately, but a handful of setup tasks are genuinely easier to do before the room fills up with boxes and bags. None of this takes long — it just needs to happen first, not whenever there's time left over.
Set Up Power Before Anything Else
Do this before a single box is opened. Figure out where the surge protector goes, plug it in, and route the cord along a wall rather than across the floor where it becomes a trip hazard for the rest of the day. It's a five-minute task now that turns into an annoying rearrangement later if it's done last.
Unload Everything From the Car First — Don't Unpack as You Go
Get everything into the room before opening anything. Move-in day parking and elevator access is usually limited to a tight window, and going back to the car for a second trip after the loading zone has filled up is a much bigger problem than a temporarily crowded room. Durable moving bags make this single trip faster than boxes, which tend to collapse or tear on the second or third handling.
Find Out Where the First Aid Kit Lives — Then Actually Unpack It First
Move-in day involves a lot of lifting, box cutters, and unfamiliar furniture assembly, and a small cut or scrape is common enough that it's worth having a first aid kit accessible before it's needed, not buried in a box labeled "misc."
Set Up Under-Bed Storage Before the Floor Disappears
Bed risers go on before the bed has anything on or under it — trying to lift a fully made, fully loaded bed later in the semester to add risers is a much bigger task than doing it during the one window the bed is empty anyway.
Then, and Only Then, Unpack
Once power, storage, and the basics are set up, unpacking goes faster because there's already a system to put things into instead of a pile to work around. Save decorating — the wall art, the string lights, the styling — for after the functional setup is done. A room that works well is easier to make look good than a beautifully decorated room that doesn't actually function.
